A few of the things that I never travel without take up no space at all:
TSA PreCheck: This is a lifesaver for anyone who likes to get to the airport last minute or for those of us who just hate to wait in line. The application fee costs between $78 and $85, depending on which provider you use to enroll, and is valid for five years. Credit cards often cover the cost of the application, so check your benefits before signing up. Clear is an additional service that uses biometric data to jump to the very front of the TSA Precheck line. This costs $199 per year, and you will still need TSA Precheck to access the expedited lines.
Global Entry: Global Entry is well worth the investment if you are a frequent international traveler. Upon returning to the United States, you can skip long immigration lines and complete a brief digital passport check. Global Entry is even more of a game-changer if you often have to transfer domestically to get home after the international portion of your flight.
Wait times for new applicants can be long and require an interview at an enrollment center, though you can choose Enrollment on Arrival (EoA) if you land in a participating airport following an international flight. The application costs $120, includes TSA Precheck, and membership is valid for five years.
Travel Health Insurance: If you are traveling outside of a region where your health insurance is valid, travel insurance is a must. Most travel health insurance plans come in at under $100 for a two-week trip. No one wants to imagine they will need the coverage—including two bandaged-up honeymooners I saw returning their ATV in Santorini—but it can save you thousands of dollars and a lot of stress if you do need medical attention.
Document Scans: I have scans of all my important travel documents—passports, visas, flights, and hotel reservations—in a Google Drive folder that I can access on my phone. This can be very helpful if you lose anything on vacation and need to print a copy to file a report or to get a replacement. You can also grant access to your loved ones, so they can help you from afar.
